Baby Formula / NEC Lawyers

Allen & Nolte represents parents of infants that were diagnosed with Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) after ingesting cow’s milk-based formulas Similac and Enfamil.

Studies have shown that infants, especially premature infants, have a greater risk of developing NEC after consuming cow’s milk-based formulas and fortifiers.  The makers of Similac and Enfamil baby formulas knew of this risk and failed to warn parents that their babies could develop this serious, and sometimes life-threatening condition, if they were fed these formulas.

What is Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)?

NEC occurs when the wall of the intestine is invaded by bacteria that causes infection and inflammation.  More severe cases of NEC can destroy the intestine wall and cause perforation of the intestine.  In these instances, surgery is often required to remove the damaged intestine.

Symptoms of NEC include:

  • swelling of the abdomen
  • vomiting or spit up of green bile
  • bloody bowel movements

The long-term consequences of NEC are often severe.  They include:

  • short-gut syndrome
  • growth failure
  • neurodevelopmental delays
  • death
